I show my attempts at trying to collect the star Mystery of the Monkey Cage in TTM 0x without modifying the HOLP. Specifically, I show my attempts at using the hat-in-hand glitch to free Ukiki without modifying the HOLP. Unfortunately, everything I tried ended up failing, as every possibility either didn't free Ukiki or freed him after updating the HOLP. Backstory: A while ago, a strat came about in BitFS/BitS that can drastically reduce the time of the any% ABC run, but requires that no stars upstairs modify the HOLP: • BitS Faster Strat for Any% ABC Run . All 0x strats for Mystery of the Monkey Cage update the HOLP when they grab Ukiki, and I'd never bothered looking into whether we could avoid this, since we wouldn't even be able to access this star if we couldn't collect Scale the Mountain 0x without modifying the HOLP. However, due to a recent finding [ • TTM Scale the Mountain 0xA without Modifyi... ], it turns out that we actually can collect Scale the Mountain 0x without modifying the HOLP, which means that Mystery of the Monkey Cage actually will be accessible in the any% ABC run, and so it's now worth looking into whether we can collect this star 0x without modifying the HOLP. Unfortunately, all my attempts ended up failing, so it doesn't look like this star will be collected in the any% route any time soon. As far as we know, picking up Ukiki MUST be done in order to collect this star, since we can't trigger Ukiki's open-the-cage sequence without picking him up and explicitly freeing him. This begs the question of whether any HOLP preservation method could be used to preserve the HOLP during the time that we hold Ukiki. Currently, there are 6 known methods to preserve the HOLP, so let's assess each of their feasibilities: (1) hat-in-hand: Assessed in this video, and declared impossible. (2) pause buffered hitstun: We can't pause while reading Ukiki's text. (3) instant release: This wouldn't trigger Ukiki's text. (4) invisible clones: This can't be done on visible objects, such as Ukiki. (5) far from camera: Even if we locked the camera at the base of the mountain, that's only ~11,000 units away from the top of the mountain, whereas we'd need the camera to be a distance of at least 20,300 units away. (6) off camera: Potentially possible if we use the fixed camera painting glitch [ • SM64 - New Glitch - Clock "Fixed camera" (... ] to lock the camera in place using the slide entrance. However, I don't see any way for Mario to get under the slide entrance floor triangles. Note: The HOLP that I start out with in this video is the exact same HOLP value used in the BitFS/BitS time save video.
