You don't need to be in ketosis to be a good fat burner. The level of ketones in your blood (beta-hydroxybutyrate) is the product of a metabolic process. More doesn't mean better. The goal for a ketogenic diet, concerning endurance exercise, should be to increase your muscles ability to burn fat. Often, the upshot of increase fat burning is an improvement in body composition (loss of body fat). However, that can also be related to the fact you can't eat sugar and be in ketosis. Not eating sugar alone may give you the same results.
