Europe's largest nuclear plant shelled in Ukraine, seized by Russia

[우크라 침공] "자포리자 원전 화재 진화…방사능 누출 안돼" Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its ninth day. Some speculate the number of refugees will spike to four-million. Kim Ji-yeon is on the line for the latest. Ji-yeon, Ukrainian authorities say Moscow's forces have "occupied" a nuclear power plant there. What can you tell us about this? Amid fighting among Ukrainian and Russian forces, Ukrainian authorities said they've extinguished a fire that broke out near the country's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has one of the largest reactors in Europe. At one point, the fire had stoked fears the conflict could develop into a nuclear catastrophe. "I’m appealing to all Ukrainians, to all Europeans, to all the people who know the word 'Chernobyl,' to those who know how much misery and how many victims the nuclear power plant explosion brought. It was a global disaster. Hundreds of thousands of people had to deal with the consequences, dozens of thousands of people had to be evacuated. Russia wants to repeat all that." The IAEA also said there was no indication of elevated radiation levels at the plant after the incident. The fire started at a five-story training building and laboratory inside the nuclear complex. Ukrainian authorities blamed a Russian artillery attack for the fire early Friday morning ... and that the forces had further deterred local firefighters from entering the site to extinguish it. Multiple media outlets quoted Ukrainian officials that Ukrainian staff are running plant operations maintaining calm... but that they're "working at gunpoint" as they're surrounded by Russian forces... that have seized control of the plant. It's unclear whether the operators are taking orders from the Russian forces. Turning our focus to talks held between the two countries. Has there been a breakthrough? During the second round of talks held in Belarus late Thursday... representatives of the two sides had agreed to set up evacuation corridors for civilians ...to maintain a temporary ceasefire in areas where the humanitarian corridors will be located... to facilitate deliveries of food and medical supplies. They've also agreed to hold a third round of talks next week. Meanwhile, millions of Ukrainian refugees poured into neighboring countries... and thousands are believed to have been killed since the invasion. "We had to run into the basement once or twice a day due to air strikes. Nobody knows when it happens, so you have to have everything ready, documents, food.... and that's not a life." "I had a very hard journey because it took more than 90 hours. We left our home in the moment when planes shoot at our community. The glass in our windows was broken and we were very scared that we will die in this place. So we left it and went to rail station." In response, European Union member countries have unanimously approved to grant immediate protection to help shelter the refugees... under its Temporary Protection Directive. EU ministers and NATO leaders gathered in Brussels to discuss their response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine... and coordinated an allied support for Ukraine.
