Lando Norris arrived in Qatar as the F1 driver's championship leader, with a 24-point lead over his two rivals – his teammate Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen. The intrigue had reached its peak, and Norris had a chance to decide the title ahead of schedule. Oscar Piastri dominated the opening Formula 1 races. He set the fastest time in the single practice session, won the sprint, and, most importantly, secured pole position for the main qualifying session. His teammate, Lando Norris, was right behind him. Max Verstappen started third. A key factor in the Formula 1 race was the decision of tire supplier Pirelli. Due to extreme wear at the high-speed Losail Circuit, a restriction was introduced: no more than 25 laps could be completed on a single set of tires. This decision predetermined a minimum two-stop strategy for all competitors, adding to the headaches for the teams. The Formula 1 start was relatively clean. Piastri maintained the lead, and Max Verstappen made a crucial overtake, passing Lando Norris and taking second place. Oscar began to pull away in the opening laps, trying to protect himself from attacks from his rivals behind. However, on lap seven, an incident in the midfield turned the race upside down. Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly clashed, resulting in a serious accident and the deployment of the safety car. At this critical moment, most F1 teams took the opportunity for an unscheduled pit stop. But McLaren made a tactical error, leaving both of their drivers on track while their competitors, including Verstappen, changed tires. This decision cost the British team dearly. After the restart, Piastri and Norris found themselves in front, but on worn tires, while Verstappen, who had already stopped, had fresher tires and a tactical advantage. Understanding Pirelli's mileage restrictions, McLaren was forced to call its drivers in for a second pit stop after their main competitors. On laps 24 and 25, Piastri and Norris pitted, losing valuable positions in the process. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, after making his second mandatory pit stop on lap 32, took the lead and never relinquished it. The final stint of the race was an attempt to recoup for McLaren. Oscar Piastri, now on fresh tires, began rapidly closing the gap on Verstappen, but the 17-second advantage proved too great. Lando Norris, facing a loss of pace, was only able to overtake Kimi Antonelli, moving up to fourth. Max Verstappen secured a confident victory, his seventh of the season and the 70th of his career, masterfully capitalizing on the tactical advantage following the safety car. Oscar Piastri finished second, demonstrating superb performance throughout the weekend. Carlos Sainz took third place on the podium, earning Williams valuable points that secured fifth place in the Constructors' Championship. Lando Norris, finishing fourth, retained his championship lead, but his lead has narrowed. He now leads Max Verstappen by 12 points and Oscar Piastri by 16. The title will be decided at the final round in Abu Dhabi, where the most intense finale of the season awaits. 2025 Formula One Championship Grand Prix Drivers: 1. Max Verstappen / Red Bull Racing 2.
