Sören Sieg: Simple Solution. African Suite No. 20, Fourth Movement (Boreas Quartett)

Ixesha in Xhosa means time, and this refers to the African Proverb: "The Europeans have the clock, the Africans have the time." I tried to capture this different, floating, African feeling of time in this work. All four movements are centered around one theme and there are many repetitions and variations, as if the time slowed down, went in circles or stood still. This fourth movement, Simple solution, is a witch dance, a coursing, real scherzo, virtuosic and full of untamed energy. The meter is as complex as the pieces of Bartók. The composed, irregular bars produce a very special nervous and floating atmosphere. What Bartók borrowed from the Romanian folk music I applied to the Black African Music here. Ixesha bedeutet Zeit auf Xhosa, und ich spiele damit auf das afrikanische Sprichwort an: „Die Europäer haben die Uhr, die Afrikaner haben die Zeit.“ Ich habe versucht, dieses andere, schwebende, afrikanische Zeitgefühl in diesem Stück einzufangen. Alle vier Sätze kreisen um jeweils ein Thema; es gibt eine Vielzahl von Wiederholungen und Variationen, also ob die Zeit sich verlangsamt. Dieser vierte Satz, Simple Solution, ist ein wahrer Hexentanz, ein Parforceritt, ein echtes Scherzo, virtuos und voll unbändiger Energie. Das Metrum ist komplex wie bei Bartók, die zusammengesetzten, unregelmäßigen Takte erzeugen eine schwebende Atmosphäre. Was Bartók der rumänischen Volksmusik entlehnte, wende ich wiederum auf die schwarzafrikanische Musik an.
