Three million incidents of child abuse are reported each year in the United States. Seventy five percent of the children who die from abuse are younger than three years old. The actual incidence of abuse and neglect however, is estimated to be three times greater than the number reported to authorities. The serious problem of underreporting is partially due to hesitation by individuals who may suspect abuse is taking place.
