Germany Says NO to Future European Border Restrictions Germany: EU’s Internal Borders Should Remain Open Germany’s Top officials are aiming to prevent internal borders from being reintroduced once again across the European Union They are aiming to rule out internal borders as an optional way to prevent the further spread of Coronavirus in Europe in the future. With the number of Coronavirus cases abroad on the rise, the increase and decrease of infections in Europe as well as breakouts and fears of a second wave since Europe started reopening ✈ In this video: Germany: EU’s Internal Borders Should Remain Open German politicians and health authorities are debating on the new measures that should be taken in order to prevent an increase of cases. Despite a proposal from the German Ministry of Health to make testing for COVID-19 mandatory at all ports of entry in Germany, the authorities have ruled out the reintroduction of border controls, which would be needed for tests to be carried at land borders. The German Minister of Interior Horst Seehofer is among those against new border controls between Germany and its neighbours. “I cannot imagine reintroducing border controls across Germany,” he said, pointing out the “huge political problems” that Germany has faced for weeks due to the temporary border controls with Austria, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. Those who supported border controls were the same who would oppose them only days later German Minister of Interior Horst Seehofer However, Seehofer believes that COVID-19 testing at the borders should be made mandatory for those coming from high-risk countries. The question is how we carry it out? Alongside with other politicians, Ralph Brinkhaus, a senior Christian Democrat (CDU) insists that internal borders should not be reintroduced, asserting that the border-free zone of Schengen is the “DNA” of the European Union. The German Health Ministry has previously announced its decision to offer free Coronavirus tests to returning travellers at all German airports. The tests would initially be optional and will be offered to those returning from non-risk countries. Back in April, an EU official had reported that those wishing to travel to the Schengen Zone, would have to present a negative COVID-19 test once the borders started reopening. at the beginning of July, some Schengen member states issued rules requiring a negative PCR test to enter the territory Germany is currently battling a resurgence of the coronavirus and has recently announced that it is having its second wave of the coronavirus pandemic as infections have risen. Germany is one of the few countries in the EU that has fared better than most of its European neighbours. Nonetheless, due to the way it has controlled the virus, the uptick in infections is worrying authorities. It is expected that other European countries will join the calls to keep Europe's internal borders open. What are your thoughts on maintaining a borderless internal Europe? Comment below.
