Even 5 years later, the constant threat that businesses would relocate to Frankfurt, Dublin and Paris leaves the fate of the city unclear. Is the future a bleak one, with London losing its competitive edge in favour of other, newer centres of global finance? Or does London’s location, access to the still-dominant English legal system and natural charm mean the exodus will be smaller than expected? Has the city been given an opportunity to modern- ise, to become a centre for non-European trade, sustainable finance or ‘FinTech’? Or has the time come to accept a less wealthy city, to bring it in line with the rest of the country and finally heal decades of national division?
