Despite Centre's Claims, Migrant Workers Say They Are Being Charged For Train Tickets

Migrant workers on the special train from Bhiwandi to Jaipur said they were charged money for the ticket, despite central government's repeated claims that the railways never asked them to pay. In the initial circular on the operation of Shramik Special Trains released on May 2, the MHA had said "local state government shall handover the tickets for these passengers cleared by them and collect the ticket fare and hand over the total amount to Railways." However, the central government in a press conference on Monday said, "The government of India has not ever talked of charging train fare from workers. 85 % of fare will be borne by the Indian Railways, 15% by state government," said Health Minister Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal.
