Mangrove Plantations in Sundarbans

Mangrove Plantations in Sundarbans

The cyclone Amphan struck the southern West Bengal coast on May 20 and has devastated areas of Sundarban and E. Midnapore district in West Bengal, and the coastal blocks of Odisha, at a time when Covid-19 and lockdown have already affected the lives of millions there. AID started working intensively with farmers in the Sundarban region in 2009 after Cyclone Aila struck exactly 11 years ago, and have since worked with more than 25000 farmers. As an organization, we are dedicated to not only provide the most disadvantaged communities with immediate relief but also support them in rebuilding and recovery of their livelihoods with dignity. In the weeks and months after the Sundarban region was devastated by Cyclone Amphan, several of AID’s partners including Chetana Sangha have been working intensively with their communities to restore the lives and livelihoods of the region. They raised 2 nurseries of 17000 saplings of 27 varieties of local plants (under the inland plantation initiative) and distributed more than 4700 saplings to over 4500 families in 23 villages. 10,000 mangrove saplings have been raised in 9 villages and around 25 Bighas of mangrove plantation were done in November 2020.
