Our Clergy For Safe Cities held its "NATIONAL FAITH LEADERS GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION SUMMIT: Resources, Recognition, and the Resurgence of Religious Leaders," helped sponsored by New York City Mayor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships, Clergy For Safe Cities and Faith Leaders For Ending Gun Violence. Faith Leaders, elected officials and community leaders across the nation shared their goals and life’s work in the fight to reduce the violence in communities in which they serve. We were joined by 325 powerful leaders nationwide, with conversations led by Pastor Gil Monrose, Rev. Al Sharpton, NYS Attorney General Letitia James, NYC Mayor Eric Adams, Rev. Willie Lightfoot, Pastor Marcus McCoy Jr., Bishop Derrick L. McRea, Rev. Larita Rice-Barnes, Rabbi Creditor, Rev.Hope A.J. Christensen, Pastor Julie Rhymer, Alexei Laushkin, Joshua Miller, Bishop Hugh Nelson, Pastor Edward-Richard Hinds and many others. Gun violence coupled with the loss of life has a significant and traumatic impact on families and society on a whole. These summits prove to be proactive, by providing engaging dialogue, best practices on clergy-led models, resources, and training that helps to deter violence in our communities. What we have seen is, strong clergy leadership, along with the shared responsibility of public safety that includes law enforcement, the community, social service agencies, and violence interrupter/cure violence organizations, proves to contribute to the reduction of violent crimes. These evidence-based faith models not only work in New York City, but also throughout our country and beyond experiencing violence. Our ultimate prayer and goal is to restore, heal, connect, recover, and empower our communities to exist without violence.
