The Faizabad Dharna (sit-in) by religious extremists has created instability in the country and is a nuisance for the peaceful majority of Pakistanis. In September, a bill was passed by the parliament that made a slight change to the declaration of faith in the election commission form. The amendment was initially pointed out by Jamiat Ulema Islam – Fazl (JUI-F) senator Hafiz Hamdullah and the change was reverted later on by an act of the parliament but Tehreek-e-Labbayk Pakistan, a newly emerged religio-political party led by the fiery cleric Khadim Hussain Rizvi, has led protests to Islamabad. The party has literally brought the capital to a standstill. The protesters demand that the person responsible for the amendment in the constitution must be named and removed from the office and that a case against the accused be filed in the Supreme Court. They also demanded that the government’s law minister Zahid Hamid must resign from his office because the responsibility ultimately lied with his ministry. They consider the amendment an act of blasphemy, though there are no legal grounds on which the amendment can be termed blasphemous. Government has offered that the Raja Zafarul Haq Committee’s findings would eventually name the person behind the amendment in the election form but the TLP protesters have refused to relent. November Sit-in 2017 by Khadim Hussain Rizvi has proved that the will of the parliament in a country like Pakistan can’t hold its ground against the mobs that threaten not only the parliamentarians and their families but with the covert support of the powerful establishment of the country, they threaten the very system of democracy which, despite being 10 years old now, remains fragile in the face of non-democratic forces. #NayaDaur #NayaDaurVideo #TLP #Pakistan ..............................
