Amazing Grace|A Devotional from Susan Long

“Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.” — Romans 5:20 Today’s reading takes us into the powerful story behind one of the most beloved hymns of all time: Amazing Grace. Written by Dennis Fisher, this devotional reflects on the remarkable transformation of John Newton, a man whose life embodied the very truth of Romans 5:20. In the 1700s, John Newton set sail with his father on a merchant ship. After his father retired, he was forced into service on a warship. Miserable and desperate, he eventually deserted and later joined the crew of a slave ship headed for Africa. As time went on, Newton hardened his heart toward the suffering of others and even became the captain of his own slave ship. But everything changed on May 10, 1748. Caught in a violent and near-fatal storm at sea, Newton cried out, “Lord, have mercy upon us!” That night, alone in his cabin, he began to ponder God’s mercy and the sacrifice of Christ. It was there that he experienced God’s amazing grace in a deeply personal and life-altering way. In time, Newton left the slave trade entirely and entered Christian ministry. Though he became a devoted preacher, he is best remembered for the hymn that recounts his own testimony: “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.” Today, we are reminded that God’s Spirit convicts us of sin and empowers us to forsake it. Through Christ, God does for us what we could never do by our own strength. That is truly amazing grace. ✨ Quote of the Morning: “God claims by grace those who have no claim to grace.” If this message encouraged you, don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more daily inspiration.
