**Get Your FREE Metal Guitar Practice Guide here: https://www.jasonstallworth.com/guita... Lesson 7 of our 30 Days of Metal Riffs is the FIRST lesson I've ever done for this metal guitar technique. In fact, it's something you don't hear a lot of in metal. But I think it's important because it's another secret weapon that you will have in your back pocket to break things up and add more character to your metal riffs! It's called... Arpeggiating rhythms. You'll hear this technique more in rock and blues, but I like to throw it in my metal riffs at times. Again, it just breaks the song up and gives it more life and diversity (yes, diversity is also important as a guitarist!) What is arpeggiated rhythms? Think of it as playing a chord, like a regular G or C or D. But instead of strumming those notes all at once, you're just picking one note at a time. To make this riff more metal, we're palm muting while arpeggiating the notes. There's a touch of elegance required when playing arpeggiated riffs and rhythms. There's also the crucial aspect of timing. If your timing is off, this riff will NOT sound good and it will be noticed. On that note, play these arpeggiated rhythms slow. This is not a speed exercise. It's ok to back off and make sure each note is fluid and distinguished. You'll notice that I play the arpeggiated notes much slower when teaching you up close than what you heard in the beginning track (this is because I was too lazy to change the BPM on the drum track! Yes, I know...that's pathetic!!) Anyway, I hope you enjoy learning these arpeggiated rhythms. Try integrating these into your own metal riffs and when you write riffs. TIP *** Oh, and these arpeggiated rhythms also sound really great along with sustained power chords. For example, have a friend just play the power chord notes (E, C, D) and sustain those while you play the arpeggiated rhythms you just learned from this lesson! I promise you that will sound KILLER!
