He would hunt and kill at will, making life miserable for the other creatures. Fearing extinction, the animals decided to make a deal with the lion. "O King of the Jungle," they said, "we will send you one animal every day as your meal. In return, you must stop hunting us." The lion, being lazy, agreed. From then on, one animal was chosen daily and sent to the lion’s den. One day, it was a clever hare’s turn. The hare didn’t want to die, so he devised a plan. He deliberately took his time, arriving at the lion’s den late. The hungry lion roared furiously, "Why are you late?" The hare bowed and replied, "Oh mighty King, I was on my way when another lion stopped me! He said he is the real king of this jungle." The lion growled, "Impossible! Take me to him!" The wise hare led the foolish lion to a deep well and pointed inside. "There he is!" said the hare. The lion peered into the well and saw his own reflection. Mistaking it for a rival, he roared and jumped in to attack—only to drown in the deep water. The hare hopped away, victorious, and the jungle was finally free from the foolish lion’s reign of terror.
