Panic in Moscow: Ukrainian Drone Strike Forces Flight Suspensions
Ukraine launched a wave of drone strikes on Moscow during the night of Sept. 23, according to Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, who said that dozens of unmanned aircraft were intercepted. Sobyanin first reported the attacks on the evening of Sept. 22 and issued updates throughout the night, stating that 34 Ukrainian drones aimed at the capital were destroyed. Russia’s Defense Ministry later claimed that a total of 69 drones had been shot down across nine regions, including Moscow Oblast and occupied Crimea. Airspace over Moscow was temporarily closed due to the attack, causing a suspension of airport operations. Emergency services were deployed to areas where debris had fallen. Officials reported no casualties or major damage. Still, local media described loud explosions across nine districts of the city. In Solntsevo and Reutov, drones reportedly crashed in residential areas after being intercepted by Russian air defenses. The outlet Baza reported delays at several airports: nine flights at Sheremetyevo, six at Vnukovo, and three at Domodedovo. Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency denied full airport closures but admitted to imposing “temporary restrictions” at Sheremetyevo. The overnight strikes on Moscow come as Kyiv continues targeting Russian regions with drones, while Moscow maintains its regular bombardment of Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and peace talks remain stalled.
