Mixed reaction in Ukraine as Russia recognizes breakaway regions as independent

People across Ukraine reacted on Tuesday after Russia formally recognized breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, even extending that recognition to regions controlled by Ukrainian forces. In Kyiv, protesters came out to condemn the move by Putin and the Russian legislature, with those in the demonstration saying they would “resist” the challenge to Ukrainian sovereignty. “We will fight for our country, for our land and no one will stop us,” said one protester. In the eastern region of Donetsk, some expressed uncertainty, but many seemed hopeful about what Putin’s declaration would mean for their lives. “What’s in it for me? Maybe greater certainty for both of my sons,” said one man named Yvacheslav. “I have two sons and because of this situation they are rushing around, looking for their place in life. Maybe finally this place will be defined.
