What is "Critical Race Theory"? What does Critical Race Theory teach? In this video, I attempt to give a simple explanation and a basic introduction to the debate over CRT. The term "Critical Race Theory" has been used to mean many different things in recent times, from modern corporate diversity training and popular anti-racism efforts to more esoteric legal theories developed as far back as the 1970s. While many of these diverging meanings are the result of political maneuvering, shifting the details this way or that to attack opponents or defend allies, it's important to remember that CRT is also not a single unified theory. Instead, it draws from a mix of intellectual traditions, academic fields, and ideas, including Critical Theory and Critical Legal Studies. It also includes thinkers with diverse assumptions and aims. As such, I’d encourage you to avoid focusing too much on the specific terminology or meaning and focus instead on the actual issues at hand. In fact, at this point, I’d recommend avoiding the term altogether. However, we should also be able to recognize the value of CRT, its insights and ideas, including the emphasis on broad structural change over individual guilt or punishment.
