In his acceptance speech to delegates at the CDU party conference, former parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz presented himself as a combative politician with clear principles. His ambition is "to lead this party, but also to lead our country," Merz told the delegates at the digital CDU federal party conference on Saturday. "I won't make it easy for myself—nor for you," he told the delegates. "I will challenge myself personally—and so will you." He would stand up for his convictions, even in conflict, Merz said. "I didn't join a mediation agency," the former leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group said. At the age of 16, he joined "a party that has principles" and "fights passionately for them." He was prepared to do so. "In a democracy, we must strive for moderation and balance, for consensus and compromise, with passion, and if necessary, even through conflict," Merz said. He will seek a clear confrontation with his "competitors" from the FDP, the Greens, and the Left Party in the federal election campaign – "respectful in form, contentious in substance." His goal is a "modern, future-oriented, dynamic, and at the same time socially just Germany," Merz said. The CDU, as a people's party, is "the only party that doesn't pit social groups against each other," he continued.
