Port Vehicle Tyres - Continental - TOC Europe Interview

TOC Europe, London 2014, Julian Alexander, Regional Sales Manager of Continental Tires gives an exclusive PTI interview. Video Transcript: Recent research says that the global TEU capacity will double between now and 2024; that gives a lot of challenges to the port terminals. As a tyre manufacture we can help them, we produce a specific range of tyres that focus on some key points. Reliability, downtime is very expensive for port operators because the vehicle is not operating, also very expensive in tyres so therefore we can really support them there energy costs are going up and up. We have a range of low rolling resistance tyres, which means you need less energy to move the tyres which saves fuel, which saves money and saves co2 and with all the vehicles in shorter confined spaces and there is a higher risk of damage. Our tyres are constructed with a robust construction and withstand damages, and of course reach the end the service life there’s a lot of harbours in the world and there is a lot of tyres and what we find in most harbours people are using the wrong tyres. There are many different types of vehicles and therefore it is very important that you use the right tyre for the right vehicle. For instance here we have a container master; it's specifically designed for reach stackers. We have straddle masters designed for straddle carriers, crane masters for the cranes and the various other tyres for the terminal tractors and tow tractors. Therefore we have a looked to the different conditions, the different vehicles and made a specific tyre for those vehicles that takes into account the safety application, so for instance a vehicle moving a container here needs to be very very stable. Our tryes contribute to that, reliability, strong casing, very robust. We are unique as a manufacturer with our Ply technology which combines traditional qualities of cross Ply technology with radial technology it gives the best of both worlds, if you use the wrong tyre, you'll get premature failure and therefore the tyre has to be thrown away before it has been used, which costs a lot of money. Therefore it is very important you use the right tyre the right job.
