They'll even feast on their own species. They've got high-cusped molars for ripping apart large prey. 🟠 Grasshopper mice have learned to neutralize the defenses of their prey. They'll bite the tail off a scorpion to keep it from stinging them. They've also grown resistant to the venom of the Arizona bark scorpion, after years of coexistence and coevolution. 🟠 Tarantulas have several defense mechanisms that help protect them from grasshopper mice, like urticating hairs, intimidation, and liquid squirt. Urticating hairs are barbed hairs on a tarantula's abdomen that can be kicked off with their back legs, creating a cloud of irritants around the spider. The hairstorm can irritate the eyes, nose, and skin of the grasshopper mouse. Tarantula intimidation tactics include: raising their head and legs, leaning back on their haunches, and exposing their fangs. And liquid squirt ... is exactly what it sounds like. The spider will turn around and give the mouse a faceful of liquid.
