It was released on April 20, 2018 for PlayStation 4 and on January 14, 2022 for Microsoft Windows. It is the eighth title in the main God of War series and also the eighth chronologically, following the events of God of War III (2010). Unlike the previous games, which were loosely based on Greek mythology, this title is loosely based on Norse mythology, with most of the time set in ancient Norway in the realm of Midgard. For the first time in the series, there are two main protagonists: Kratos, the ancient Greek god of war who is accompanied by his young son Atreus. After the death of Kratos' second wife and Atreus' mother, they travel to fulfill their promise to scatter her ashes on the highest peak of the Nine Realms. Kratos keeps his troubled past a secret from Atreus, who is unaware of his divine nature. Along the journey, they encounter monsters and gods from the Norse world.
