Man Detained in Arizona Freeway Shootings

(12 Sep 2015) Police swarmed a convenience store near Interstate 10, detained a man and seized his white Chevrolet Tahoe on Friday, raising hopes of a resolution to the freeway shootings rattling the Phoenix area. Authorities declined to provide details about what led them to the man or any other specifics of the investigation. He has not been arrested, but his questioning could continue for hours, and the SUV is being examined for any evidence that might connect it to 11 confirmed shootings on the city's freeways in the last two weeks, said Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves. Graves said officers investigating the shootings will remain on patrol and his agency will keep posting freeway billboard messages urging the public to come forward with any tips. "This investigation continues," he said. "We brought this person in for questioning, we detained this person, and our investigators are still out there." Phoenix drivers have been unnerved since the shootings began on Aug. 29, mostly along Interstate 10, a major route through the city. News of a possible suspect being detained brought welcome relief to many motorists. "Oh, it's fabulous," said Phoenix resident Suzanne Buhrow. "I travel a lot during the day from one end of the city to the other and often use I-10 and the 51, and it's a little bit nerve-racking, and actually seeing those signs up as I was driving this morning along the 10 was a little upsetting."
