Michael Sussman, the lawyer for New York Hanukkah stabbings suspect Grafton Thomas, held a news conference on Monday alongside Thomas's mother and Reverend Wendy Paige, following the attack that wounded five at a rabbi's house-synagogue in Monsey, New York. Grafton Thomas, 37, is accused of attempted murder after allegedly bursting into a Hanukkah celebration on Saturday night. Sussman outlined Thomas's “long history of mental illness and hospitalizations” while Rev. Paige urged to shift the focus on the incident from "terrorism" to "mental health." Rev. Paige also spoke about her shock when asked about his handwritten journals that allegedly express anti-Jewish sentiments. Thomas is expected to appear in federal court to face five counts of obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs by attempting to kill with a dangerous weapon and causing injuries.
