BobBlast issue 343 Consider your Point of View, Part One The viewpoint is you, the artist, looking at what you are about to paint. There's no right or wrong choice of viewpoint, it's one of the first decisions you make, as you design your composition and begin your painting. For instance, take a single subject - a coffee cup. Photograph it from different angles: •Looking straight on •Looking straight down •Looking from underneath •Looking from the side Consider your point of view… Is it ordinary and common? Or unique and memorable? The paintings that get my attention are the ones where the painter twisted the image as if it were painted on taffy. Think Dali and his “melting” paintings. Another one of my favorites is Van Gogh’s bedroom, where his point of view had multiple focal points. Hockney’s Mulholland Drive series are twisting and turning with a 2-dimensional perspective. They appear flattened out with no clear perspective point of view. Part One has featured still life and interior viewpoints. In the next BobBlast, we’ll showcase landscapes with different points of view. Point of view… it doesn’t matter what it is. Have one. Enjoying watching Bob's Demos?
