The battered hunk of metal resting at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean is the El Faro in its watery grave, according to images released Sunday by federal investigators. Despite a gash through the cargo ship’s stern, its visible insignia clearly identifies the vessel as the doomed El Faro, which sank on Oct. 1 near the Bahamas after taking on a catastrophic amount of water during Hurricane Joaquin. The ship’s gnarled navigation bridge snapped off and settled a half mile from the hull on the ocean bed at 15,000 feet, 2,500 feet deeper than the Titanic.
