Names and Sounds of Arabic vowels. we call letters in Arabic HARF/HURUUF and vowels HARAKAH/HARAKAAT or SHAKL/ASH-KAAL In this lesson we will go learn Arabic vowels, their names and their sounds. We have two kinds of vowels in Arabic, Long vowels and Short vowels. The short vowels are FAT-HA ـَـ (فتحة which has the sound 'a' as in apple and arm. The second one is KASRA (ـِـ ( كسرة which always comes below a letter and has the sound 'i' as in ink and east. The third one is DHAMMAH ضمة ) ـُـ) which appears on top of a letter and appears like a slant number nine, it has the sound 'u' as in put and ooze. The forth one is SAKNA or SUKUUN (ـْ ( سكنة which is simply a letter without a vowel i.e. a consonant, therefore in Arabic if a letter doesn't have a vowel we put a sakna/sukuun on top of a letter. The word 'Simba' if it was to be written in Arabic the letter M will have a sakna/sukuun since it does not have a vowel, a sakna looks like tiny letter 'c' facing the opposite side, also it looks like a tiny circle. The fifth is double fat-ha or two fat-has, we call it FAT-HA-TYN (فتحتين)( literally meaning two fat-has ) ــً it has the sound 'an' as in ant. The sixth one is double kasra or two kasra, we call it KASRA-TYN ( كسرتين ) ( literally meaning two kasra ) ـٍ it has the sound 'in' as in and bin. The seventh one is double dhammah or two dhammah, we call it DHAMMAH-TYN ( ضمتين ) ( literally meaning two dhammahs ) ـٌ it has the sound 'un' baboon and racoon. The eighth one is called a SHADDAH شدة , which is two same letters being together, the first one having a sakna the the second one having a vowel, and its the last of the short vowels. The Arabic long vowels are very easy, they are only three, ا و ي Alif, Wow and Ya. it is simply making the sound 'a' 'u' and 'i' long using alif wow, and ya respectively.
