On March 11, 2013 Nature Conservancy staff, along with volunteers and partner agencies, conducted a prescribed burn on the Owen Easement - 180 acres of Longleaf Pine in Sussex County, VA. Longleaf Pine is a fire dependent species, requiring bare ground for seeds to germinate. Prescribed burns expose the bare soil and also reduce fuel -- pine litter and dead grasses -- which in turn reduces the intensity of and potential damage from future fires. © 2013 The Nature Conservancy CREDITS: Photography / Videography - Bobby Clontz / Sam Lindblom SPECIAL THANKS: Bill Owen VA Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) VA Dept. of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) VA Department of Forestry (DOF) USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) TNC Staff and volunteers
