''Can I Depend On You'' (Meteor 5012-B Master) (Robert Ellen-Leo Baxter) (Meteor Music Publishing) (2:18) Recorded Unknown Date 1953 in Dallas or Houston, Texas Name (No. Or of Instruments) Leo Baxter & His Orchestra Leo Baxter - Vocals & Piano More Details Unknown Producer & Recording Engineer - Possibly Bob Shad Band-leader Leo Baxter played tenor sax and, in 1949, recorded for the then obscure Vee-Jay label in Houston. His instrumental, 'Royal Shuffle' with Irving Williams on piano, was coupled with a vocal from Annie Lee Baxter, presumably his wife. Baxter's own forceful vocal is featured on 'Can I Depend On You?' that appeared on Meteor 5012 as a result of the Shad connection. By this time he had built up a credible band and Donnie Grey takes an intense vocal for the atmospheric 'Heartaches, with rippling piano accompaniment. lt is safe to say that the record was recorded by Shad in either Dallas or Houston. The latter seems to have been Baxter's base and he re-recorded 'Can I Depend On You?' in a January 1954 session for Henry Stone, an associate of Shads who was then acting as head of for King's DeLuxe subsidiary. After this Baxter would have to Wwait until December 1956, when he secured a session with Duke for a single release 'No Longer Wanted' / 'No Nights Without You'. At this time Don Robey was signing a number of one-off artists, while remaining Very cautious about putting out money to seriously promote new talent on his labels. As far as is known Baxter and his band never got the chance to record again.
