This auspicious Karwa Chauth vrat is kept by Hindu women in India for the health and long life of their husbands. Karwa literally means diya (earthen lamp) and Chauth means fourth. As it comes on the 4th day after the full moon in Kartik maas (month) and you worship the moon with a diya before your break the fast, it’s called Karwa Chauth vrat. This year Karwa Chauth is on Oct 27th while some are also celebrating on Oct 28th. The day starts with a meal called Sargi that must be consumed before sunrise. We have poori, aalo tamatar ki sabji, boondi raita, and kheer for the sweet dessert dish. We can also have tea and water too since nothing is allowed during the fasting day and you can only eat after the karwa chauth rituals and pooja. A lot of people involved in pooja and fast don’t eat onion and garlic on this day and therefore all of these karwa chauth recipes are made without onion and garlic but taste equally good with the spices and ingredients used.
