Upon linking all the stories together after interrogating the Task Force Vanguard members, Richter deduces that Project Phoenix was a coup attempt in order to appoint Freisinger as the new Führer of the Fourth Reich. He suspects Freisinger has killed Hitler and quickly realizes he's not part of their plans to establish the Fourth Reich. With Berlin falling under siege by the Red Army, Richter plans to use Polina Petrova (Lady Nightingale) as leverage for safe passage from the invading Soviets. However, Lucas Riggs overpowers the guards using a hidden knife and frees the rest of Task Force Vanguard. They must hunt down Freisinger before he escapes Berlin with key documents on Project Phoenix. The Battle of Berlin was one of the last major offensives of the European theatre of World War II. On April 16th, 1945, the Soviet Red Army entered Berlin from the east and south, while shelling the city's center. The remaining German garrison consisted of several depleted and disorganised Army and Waffen-SS divisions, along with poorly trained Volkssturm and Hitler Youth members. Over the course of the next week, the Red Army gradually took the entire city. On April 30th, Hitler died by suicide, with several of his officials also dying by suicide shortly afterwards. The city's garrison surrendered on May 2nd but fighting continued until the end of the war in Europe on May 8th (9 May in the Soviet Union) as some German units fought westward so that they could surrender to the Western Allies rather than to the Soviets. Following the city's surrender, vengeful Soviet troops engaged in mass rape, pillage and murder on the Berliners. Eventually, the Soviet-occupied portion of Berlin would become the de facto capital city of the German Democratic Republic (known as East Germany) until the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989.
