Will The Stimulus Check Affect My 2020 Return. The short answer is no. The stimulus checks are an additional refundable tax credit the government has created in hopes of stimulating the economy. Because it is a refundable tax credit that means you do not have to pay it back. It also means that it will not have an impact on any other tax credits you are planning on taking on your 2020 tax return. That means you will not get a smaller return later if you take the $1200 stimulus check now. Remember that a lot of things can effect your tax return. Income level, withholdings each pay period, self employment income. If you find that your 2020 tax return to be different you need to look at those other factors as they will all have an impact on your tax return. 2. When Can I Expect To Get My Stimulus Check? This is a bit harder to get exactly right. However there have been multiple reports in the media of the government sending out $1200 stimulus checks this week or next week. That means they will have sent them out by April 15th. Larry Kudlow, Director of the US Economic Council, said that they will be sent out this week or perhaps next. This will likely be for those who have direct deposit information filed with the IRS. This is done by filing for our tax return to be delivered via Direct Deposit for our 2019 taxes or 2018 taxes if we have not filed our 2018 taxes yet. If we had our return sent via the mail then it may take much longer to get your stimulus check. There have been reports that checks may not be sent out until May. The IRS has stated on its website they are hoping to get a online portal ready so that individuals can enter their direct deposit information and receive their $1200 Stimulus Checks via direct deposit and much quicker. The governments intention with all of this is to get money to people in hopes they will end up spending it and have it stimulate the economy. If you do not have your direct deposit information filed with the IRS, look for the online portal to go live and then enter your information as quickly as possible. 3. What If I Haven't Filed Taxes? If you have not filed taxes in either 2019 or 2018 you are still eligible for a Stimulus Check. If you receive social security benefits and that's it so you did not file a tax return, then the IRS will use your information used to deliver social security benefits and use that to deliver your $1200 Stimulus Check. If you do not file a tax return because you do not meet the income limits that require you to file a tax return you should file a simple tax return for 2019 so the IRS has your information and can send you a stimulus check. This whole process has the potential of taking a lot of time. File direct deposit information with the IRS to hopefully speed the process along. Let me know if you have any other questions!
