Rohingya refugees arrive at camp

(9 Sep 2017) Tens of thousands of people are risking their lives to escape the escalating violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state. The UN said at least 270,000 of the country's Muslim minority Rohingya community have made the treacherous journey into Bangladesh in the last two weeks. Local Officials in Bangladesh on Saturday warned the number of refugees crossing the border wais putting a strain on an already poor population in Cox's Bazar. In Kutupalong, on the border between Myanmar and Bangladesh, there are too many hungry mouths to feed. A local chairman called on the government for immediate humanitarian assistance as he said the sheer number of refugees needing help was putting a strain on the community. Mohammad Shah Alam also said the price of goods had doubled and many local people were 'exasperated' with the situation. There are tens of thousands of Rohingyas at the Kutupalong camp and more keep coming. Bangladesh is a desperately poor country and it can't cope with such an exodus, but there appears to be no end in sight to this mass movement of people.
