Following Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, China has conducted bold military drills, creating tension in the region. China unilaterally crossed the median line as state-run CCTV announced regular military drills in regions east of the median line. These actions are a great threat to Taiwan’s national defenses. Along with the drills, China enacted a series of countermeasures, including cancelling or suspending eight areas of cooperation with the U.S., and published a white paper on the Taiwan Question. While all eyes are on China, we should especially consider how future relations between Taiwan, the U.S. and China will affect the safety of Taiwan. The U.S. Senate tabled the Taiwan Policy Act in wake of the drills.
