Add the glamour of Hrithik Roshan, and Mumbai Indians instantly became a national sensation. But cricket has always been a game that cannot be won on paper or glamour alone. As the season began, this blockbuster setup quickly turned into a disaster. Injuries to key players and the infamous slap incident involving Harbhajan Singh shook the team’s stability. For the next five years in the Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians tried every formula possible—spending heavily, signing the best players, and hiring top coaches. Yet, the IPL trophy remained out of reach. Then came 2013, when the franchise made a bold move by bringing in Ricky Ponting, one of the most successful captains in cricket history and a three-time World Cup winner. Expectations skyrocketed, and fans believed Mumbai’s fortunes were about to change. However, the results initially remained disappointing, and the team continued to struggle. After six matches, with elimination looming, Mumbai Indians made a defining strategic shift. Ponting stepped down, and Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy. What followed was one of the greatest turnarounds in IPL history. Under Rohit’s leadership, Mumbai Indians staged a remarkable comeback and went on to win five IPL titles in the next eight seasons—transforming the franchise into a dynasty and redefining leadership success in the league.
