Excel Pivot Tables Calculate the Percent of Parent Row - Episode 1280

Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Pivot Table and then Calculating the Percent of a Parent Row. Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we're diving into Chapter 3 of the Pivot Table Data Crunching for Excel 2010 book. And let me tell you, there's a great new feature that has been added for us in Excel 2010. So, let's get started by inserting a pivot table. Once we have our pivot table set up, we can choose two different fields to analyze, such as region and market. And for this example, let's choose Revenue. Now, here's where the magic happens. We can go to Options > Calculation and then select "Show values as". And here's where we have the option for "Percentage of Parent Row". This is the Holy Grail that people have been wanting for a long time. So, let's say we want to know what percentage of the West region is made up by California. In the past, this would have been a difficult calculation to do. But with the new "Percentage of Parent Row" option, we can easily see that California makes up 95% of the West region. And if we look at Seattle, we can see that it makes up 4% of the West region. And of course, the West region itself is 7.29% of the total. But that's not all! Excel 2010 also added other useful calculations such as ranking values from smallest to largest and largest to smallest. These new features make it much easier to find the information we need in our pivot tables. So, if you ever need to calculate a percentage of a parent row, you'll be dancing with joy because it's now so easy to do. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of the MrExcel netcast.
