As part of the Salt Arts #home series, and to mark our 100th production since 2015, we present: Alys & Faiz ðī A reading of the letters from Alys Faiz to her husband Faiz Ahmed Faiz, while he was in prison in the the 1950's, by their granddaughter Mira Hashmi. . . Mira writes to us from Lahore: I distinctly remember that on the door to my grandfatherâs study in his home in Lahore, there used to hang a little metallic sign that said âBehind every successful man stands a woman telling him that heâs wrong.â Excluding the second part of the statement, in my grandfatherâs case, that woman was my grandmother, Alys Faiz. Us children called her Mama, as did many others. She was Faizâs wife, his partner, his shield, his rock, and, when necessary, the narrowed pair of blue eyes keeping check on his sometimes unwarranted generosity and selflessness. . . In this collaboration with Salt Arts, I will read a few excerpts from Mamaâs letters to Nana. I hope youâll find them as poignant, funny and moving as I do. . .
