Can you "exercise" to get rid of reading glasses? What if dementia has less to do with your BRAIN and everything to do with their EYES? Is ADHD actually a vision problem? A brain-based eye doctor explains the neuroscience. I'm Neal K. Shah, a Johns Hopkins- and NIH-funded caregiving researcher and CEO of CareYaya, and I sat down with Dr. Bryce Appelbaum to unpack a idea that could change how you think about aging: your eyes see, but your BRAIN is what actually does the seeing. If someone you love was handed a glasses prescription and told everything looks fine, this conversation was made for you. HERE'S WHAT WE COVER: ▶️ Why "20/20 eyesight" does NOT mean your vision is fine, and the difference between a standard eye exam and a functional vision exam that most doctors never run. ▶️ The link between untreated vision problems and nearly 1 in 5 dementia cases, and why getting lost or confused in familiar spaces can be an early warning sign. ▶️ How hidden vision problems can MIMIC ADHD, dyslexia, and learning disabilities, and the study showing kids labeled with ADHD are 3 times more likely to have a convergence problem. ▶️ Why more than HALF of your brain is wired for vision, and what that means for memory, focus, balance, and falls as you age. ▶️ Screens as toxicity: how too much passive TV and scrolling quietly weakens the visual and nervous system, especially in early cognitive decline. ▶️ Dr. Appelbaum's own story going from a scared kid with an eye turn and no depth perception to a doctor who now rewires the eye-brain connection in others. ▶️ The good news: vision is a SKILL that can be trained and strengthened at any age, and cognitive decline is not always a life sentence. THE ONE THING TO REMEMBER: If any of this hits home, do ONE thing. Book a functional vision exam, not just a standard eye exam. A regular exam checks if your eyes are healthy and if you can read the chart. A functional exam checks whether your brain and eyes are actually working together as a team, which is what reading, driving, balance, and navigating a room depend on. THE BOTTOM LINE: Vision is not separate from the brain. It is a direct window into it. So much of what we brush off as "just getting older" may be a vision problem hiding in plain sight, and a lot of it is fixable. This episode is about helping you spot it early, for yourself and for the people you care for.
