Somalia: Nine people were killed after al-Shabab militants stormed a hotel in the port city of Kismayo in an attack that started with a suicide bombing Sunday. Security forces later ended the siege, killing the gunmen and rescuing scores of people, according to authorities. Kenya: Well-known Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif was shot dead when police hunting car thieves opened fire on the vehicle he was traveling in as it drove through a police roadblock on the outskirts of the capital, Nairobi, without stopping, authorities said Monday. South Africa: The country will overhaul its anti-corruption strategy and ensure the independence of prosecutors, President Cyril Ramaphosa said Sunday. Tanzania: Residents and firefighters worked on Sunday to put out a fire which broke out on Friday on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The cause of the fire is not known. Benin: An initiative is under way in Benin to create jobs and revenue by processing cotton locally, with the goal of exporting apparel to consumer markets in Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States. In the last few years, Benin has become Africa's leading cotton producer.
