The game features the return of Frank West, the protagonist of the first game and the second game's spin-off; Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. Dead Rising 4 returns to Willamette, the setting of the original game, during the Christmas season. The game is a sequel set sixteen years after the events of the first game, and one year after the events of Dead Rising 3, though it also acts as a soft reboot of the series.
