Channel 4 on Twitter: / channel4 | Facebook: / channel4 The murder of Rishat Ametov might have gone unnoticed were it not for one astonishing fact - his abduction was caught on camera. Rishat was abducted on 3rd March 2014, in the midst of Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. Russia had been accused of sending troops to the region and Rishat was carrying out a silent protest in front of a government building in Simferopol, Crimea’s capital. Rishat was a member of the Crimean Tatar ethnic minority. Like many other Crimean Tatars, Rishat opposed the Russian takeover. This put him at odds with the Russian-speaking majority in Crimea, most of whom supported Russia’s actions. On the day he disappeared, Rishat was standing in front of a line of troops guarding the government building. Suddenly, some men appeared. They snatched Rishat from the busy public square, bundled him into a car, and drove away at speed. Rishat’s body was found two weeks later. Eyewitnesses claim that Rishat was found naked and in handcuffs, his face wrapped with duct tape. When Rishat’s body was returned to his family, it showed other signs of torture including cigarette burns. A year on from his murder, Rishat’s family have lost faith in the official investigation into his death. They’ve been told that the police have closed the case. The Crimean authorities told us investigations are ongoing. They say the prime suspect is in Ukraine and can’t be arrested. The family’s only remaining hope lies with the videos of Rishat’s abduction. In particular, they want to find a mysterious man who filmed the moment of Rishat’s abduction. Could he help them get justice? Unreported World’s mission is to bring you untold stories from around the world. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to get more stories like this one.
