Palestinians refer to May 15, 1948, as the "nakba" or catastrophe. The Arabic term "nakba" is used to describe the Palestinians' defeat and exile in the war that surrounded the founding of the Jewish state. Marchers in Bethlehem held Palestinian flags and a giant key symbolic of their hoped-for return. In Gaza City, hundreds of children took part in the march, holding placards with the names of the villages and towns emptied during the war. Some five (m) million Palestinian refugees and their descendants are scattered through the Middle East.
