The 16-year civil war that began in Mozambique in 1976 was a catastrophe for the people of southeastern Africa. Child soldiers were trained to kill and forced to murder their own families. Those left behind were the women with their young children, the elderly, and, after the war, the young fighters, if they had survived. The country's economy was devastated, and people fought for their very survival. Nuns from Germany and Austria helped alleviate the suffering, especially among the rural poor, during and after the war. They received financial support from aid organizations, including Missio.
