Why is the French Open called Roland Garros? Jun 3, 2012 Roland Garros died in 1918 after his plane was shot down in the Ardennes. Lesieur became a powerful person in French sports. When a tennis stadium was built in 1928, close to the stadium were they had played rugby together, Lesieur decided it had to be named after his late friend and national hero.
