In this video you’ll follow Mike from start to finish as he hews and carves a black walnut bowl from a rough split blank. We’re inside for this video as the weather turns cold here in northern Indiana. Mike talks about his process, thoughts and things for you to think about as you carve your own bowls at home. This video is a bit longer than our normal ones, but we didn’t want you to miss a thing. If this video is a bit long for you to sit through in one sitting, we’ll be releasing segmented videos of this process in the coming days that will focus on each step of the bowl carving process. The tools we’re using this round are pretty simple, a granfurs bruks bowl adze, and a gransfurs bruks carving axe. Using only these two tools, Mike is able to share a focused process. The duo operates out of their dual story workshop they built together on the family farm. In the basement they work in the hotshop with metal and glass, on the second story they work with wood to make carvings and furniture as well as fine hand engraving for jewellery and historic accoutrements.
