With most of Marvel's characters back under Disney's control, except for Spider-Man at Sony, a reboot could streamline the MCU and make it more accessible to new audiences. Additionally, the remaining rights held by Sony and Universal Pictures for characters like Spider-Man, Hulk, and Namor could complicate future storylines if not addressed in a reset of the franchise. Marvel Studios now has access to characters like X-Men and Fantastic Four after the Fox merger, and the rights to Namor and Hulk held by Universal are set to expire soon. Marvel previously sold these rights due to financial struggles in the late '90s when comic book movies were not as lucrative as they are today. While rights to other franchises have reverted back to Marvel, Sony still retains control over Spider-Man, and Universal has held onto the rights to Hulk and Namor. Disney currently owns two-thirds of Hulu, and Comcast (which owns NBCUniversal) has the remaining share. However, in 2024, Disney will need to buy out Comcast's share or sell the entirety of Hulu to someone else. This presents an opportunity for Disney to secure distribution rights for Hulk and Namor if they decide to make films featuring these characters, as Comcast could distribute them on Peacock, their own streaming service. Wall Street analyst Jason Bazinet of Citi has suggested this as a possible path for Disney to regain the distribution rights for these characters. I discuss potential storylines and future directions for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). I express enthusiasm for matchups like Hulk vs. Wolverine and Wanda vs. Jean 'Phoenix' Grey and suggest that Marvel should extend the current saga to Phase 7, possibly set on Battleworld, with films like Young Avengers, Midnight Sons, and another Captain America movie with Anthony Mackie. I also propose recasting the original Avengers characters with new actors to interact with the X-Men and Fantastic Four, while allowing Tom Holland's Spider-Man to continue in the new universe with Miles Morales taking over as the new Spider-Man. I emphasize the need to manage viewing requirements to attract new audiences, making individual franchises accessible without needing to watch previous films. I also suggest that big team-up event films should have limited consequences, avoiding confusion for casual viewers. Lastly, I speculate that an MCU Secret Wars event could serve as a soft reboot, allowing for the recasting and integration of new characters.
