Medal of Honor. was developed by DreamWorks Interactive with a story by filmmaker Steven Spielberg. The game was released for the PlayStation console on October 31, 1999.[2] Spielberg's inspiration for the series came while directing and producing the film Saving Private Ryan. Many of the film's sound effects (such as gunshots, screams and explosions) were used in the game and reused in subsequent titles. the player controls Lieutenant Jimmy Patterson, a soldier and agent linked to the OSS, a secret United States military organization created during the Second World War. Jimmy works secretly as he carries out a series of sabotage and combat missions against Nazi Germany's war machine. The objective is to complete a series of missions that include sabotaging or destroying structures and neutralizing soldiers from the armies of the Axis Powers, helping members of the French Resistance, such as the character Manon Batiste, who is the playable protagonist of the sequel, Medal of Honor: Underground. The games in the series represent some historical moments from the Second World War, such as the Normandy Landings on Omaha Beach, replicating the opening scenes of the film Saving Private Ryan. All the weaponry replicates in detail that used at the time, and the sound design and soundtrack that accompanies the games have been received with several awards for their quality. The last two games in the series, the 2010 Medal of Honor reboot and 2012's Medal of Honor: Warfighter left the World War II setting and the series began to focus on modern combat, featuring wars against terrorism in various parts of the world. such as Afghanistan, the Philippines, Somalia, Dubai and Madrid. A new title announced in 2019, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond for Windows and Oculus Rift, takes the franchise back to its origins and is once again set during World War II. Above and Beyond was released worldwide on December 11, 2020. In Germany, the series was considered controversial, due to the Nazi symbols, such as emblems, uniforms and flags, that can be found throughout the games. In that country, this type of symbolism can only be used for historical references.
