Thursday marks 100 days since New Jersey’s first positive COVID-19 case. It caused a statewide shutdown and a pause on the world. Now, the state is emerging from months of lockdown. Since the peak of the outbreak, new hospitalizations are down more than 90%. Total hospitalizations decreased 80% and ventilator use is down by the same margin. Patients in the ICU have decreased by about three-quarters. And the rate of transmission has been slowing for weeks. Each new confirmed case is infecting fewer than one other person at a rate of 0.62. At the peak, one person was infecting five people. The state also announced more than 1 million coronavirus tests have been conducted. Officials on Thursday reported 539 new positive cases and 70 new deaths.
