DAILY DOSE | On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the public before the UNSC meeting on Hezbollah's tunnels convened, urging them to hold Hezbollah, Lebanon and Iran responsible for the cross-border tunnels, which he said jeopardize the security and safety of civilian populations. What will actually come out of this meeting? Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro analyzes. Story: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday called for the international community to condemn Hezbollah’s 'war crimes' and hold both Lebanon and Iran accountable for the terror group’s acts of aggression toward Israel. Speaking in English ahead of a UN Security Council meeting, set to take place at 5:00 pm Israel time, Netanyahu described Israel’s expectations from world leaders regarding its discovery of four cross-border attack tunnels entering Israeli territory from Lebanon. Shortly after Netanyahu spoke, the Israeli Defense Forces released a statement detailing the location of the most recently discovered tunnel, which it says crosses the border near the Israeli town of Zarit. Hezbollah’s 'goal has been to penetrate our territory and kidnap our people, including civilians… and conquer the northern piece of the Galilee,' he said. 'This is not merely an act of aggression. It’s an act of war.' The Israeli premier said that Israel’s concerns have been confirmed by UNIFIL, the UN’s peacekeeping force stationed in the demilitarized zone between Israel and Lebanon, which said earlier this week that the attack tunnel represent a clear violation of UN Resolution 1701. Adopted in 2006 to end the second war fought between Israel and Lebanon, Resolution 1701 called for a full cessation of hostilities between all armed factions and a demilitarized zone south of the Litani River, implying neither Israeli Defense Forces nor Hezbollah militants are allowed to breach the area.'Hezbollah is doing all of this because Iran supports it in every way including with money... money that it got from the flawed Iran deal. This [Hezbollah’s tunnel network] is part of the Iranian web of aggression,' Netanyahu said. Hezbollah is 'committing double war crime by targeting Israeli civilians while hiding behind Lebanese civilians,' he claimed. 'The people of Lebanon have to understand that Hezbollah is putting them in jeopardy. We expect Lebanon to take action to protest against this not to give into this,' Netanyahu said, adding that the Lebanese government is 'culpable' in any activity coming from their territory. 'We think the international community should hold Iran, Hezbollah, and Lebanon accountable, and they should act accordingly.'
