Exploring the various functions the Colosseum has been used for since 80 C.E. Note: The Indian-head test pattern introduced by RCA in 1939 for the calibration of TV sets makes an interesting analogy with the Ancient Roman Gladiatorial spectacles in that it includes a caricatured stereotype of a recently subjugated people. Just as American audiences watched caricatured stereotypical Indigenous "Indians" on their new TV sets in Western after Western during the 1950s, so too the Ancient Romans watched "Gauls", "Thracians", and "Samnites" as various forms of gladiators: Gallus or Murmillo; Thracian or Thraex; Samnite or Hoplomachus, etc. Music: Beethoven: 1.
